Question and Answer

We have received a large number of inquiries regarding the change in our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Team affiliation. In response to these inquiries, we are publishing the following Q. & A. in hopes to answer any questions you may have.

Q. Why Bonsai Jiu-Jitsu Team?
A. Bonsai Jiu-Jitsu (Bonsai JJ) was a team founded by the Souza Family in Brazil. The late Master Adilson de Souza taught BJJ to his children (four sons and 1 daughter) in their youth years. Despite his passing, his children continued on with BJJ, further establishing the foundations of Bonsai JJ and expanding to Japan.

Our BJJ Team was first exposed to Bonsai JJ after Marcos de Souza and Roberto Satoshi de Souza first had a seminar in the Philippines with Origins BJJ. Origins BJJ is a Manila based BJJ team headed by Mike Vives, brother of New Breed Training Center’s head BJJ instructor, Mark Vives. Mike was able to introduce Mark to Marcos and Satoshi who eventually brought the Souza brothers to Chicago in 2012 and 2013.

Both Marcos and Satoshi made such an impact on the Team here both on and off that mats, that joining Bonsai JJ was such a natural change. During their time here, Marcos and Satoshi not only shared their BJJ with us, but also their values, Family, and how BJJ has shaped and changed their lives.

We’re honored to be a part of their Team.

Q. Why the change in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Team affiliation?
A. Our head instructors and staff are always looking for ways to improve everything we offer at New Breed Training Center. We have always tried to look ahead to the future and always want to provide the best possible instruction and training environment to all of our members and the community.

Because of this, we felt a change was in order to align with the goals of our BJJ Team. Our BJJ team is always looking to make strides in the BJJ community, both competitively on the mat and off the mat. We feel the change in BJJ team affiliation will help improve in all aspects.

Q. Are we still New Breed?
A. Yes and No. The name of our facility is still New Breed Training Center. We have grown tremendously since our beginnings in 2004 and now offer more than just Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). We have created competitors in Muay Thai, Boxing, and Mixed Martial Arts, which all fly the New Breed ’Training Center” team name. However, our BJJ Team is no longer affiliated with New Breed “Academy;” the BJJ Team. We understand this may cause some confusion, however, our Facility and our Family—our members, have grown to be more than just a BJJ Team.

We still are known as New Breed (Training Center)—Just not New Breed Jiu-Jitsu or New Breed Academy.

Q. Are we changing the name of the Facility?
A. At this time, we there are no plans to change the name of the Facility; however, that is something we may explore in the future.

Q. How does this affect our members?
A. This change does not directly affect any of our Boxing, Muay Thai, MMA, or Fitness members. This is a change which really only affects our BJJ Team. Affiliating with Bonsai JJ will provide our BJJ Team with exposure to different styles and open training possibilities in both Brazil and Japan as well as friends of Bonsai JJ here in the USA. Our BJJ Team will also be the first US affiliate for Bonsai JJ. We see this as an exciting mutually beneficial move for both Bonsai JJ and our BJJ Team. The possibilities are endless and the potential is limitless for our whole Team to grow as a competitive Team and a Family.

Q. Are we changing our logo (Bulldog)?
A. We are not changing our logo. The Bulldog logo was created by one of the original members of our Team in November 2004 and pays tribute to Carlson Gracie Sr. and Jr.—where many of our instructors and students first received their start in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Regardless of what our facility may be called, we are retaining the Bulldog logo.

Q. Is there anything else our BJJ members need to know about the change in affiliation?
A. Please remember that when registering for IBJJF tournaments to register under “Bonsai JJ – USA.” Additionally, please show your support for our new BJJ affiliation by acquiring a Bonsai JJ patch and sporting it on your Gi/Kimono. You can still wear the New Breed Training Center Patch (Bulldog), but you should also wear the Bonsai JJ Patch to represent our new BJJ Team.

Q. What does this mean for our affiliates? (Team East Coast, FloMMA, Arena Training Center, Blackburn Martial Arts)

A. As far as BJJ affiliation because all of these affiliates were affiliated with New Breed Training Center while their BJJ program was a part of New Breed Academy, they too have also changed BJJ Team affiliation to Bonsai JJ. If they have separate patches to represent their respective facilities (Team East Coast, FloMMA, etc.), they definitely represent their respective teams as well as Bonsai JJ – USA and are allowed to fly their individual patches (in addition to the Bonsai JJ patch).
