Mark Vives

Head Instructor – Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & MMA Coach

Profile_Mark

Born in 1976, Mark began his journey into Martial Arts in 1997 initially in Muay Thai then transferred over into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1998 where his focus still remains.  After taking some time away for personal reasons, Mark returned to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2003 and has since then been actively competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments and training others in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and also Mixed Martial Arts. Mark had a short stint in MMA with a spotless record and now focuses on overseeing the BJJ and MMA competitors.  He is one of three Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black belt siblings (Mike Vives – 2003 and Myles Vives – 2004), receiving his Black Belt in 2011 from John Ramirez and John Ouano.

Daniel Midell

Assistant Instructor BJJ
Following an extensive wrestling career, Danny started training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2004 under the late Carlson Gracie Senior. He earned his black belt in 2012 and cites his main grappling influences as Dan Gable and Brian Ferrell. Danny’s other passions in life are firefighting, impersonating fellow instructor Vinny Levin, and being handsome. Please refrain from touching his hair while training with him.

 

Samuel Spiegelman

Strength and Conditioning Coach & Assistant Instructor – BJJ
Sam spearheads our Performance Based Strength and Conditioning programs at New Breed Training Center.  Sam earned his degree in Exercise Science from Carthage College while playing Collegiate Football from 1998 to 2002.  He has been able to work with our competitive athletes in enabling them to reach higher standards of excellence by increasing their strength and conditioning.   Sam also serves as one of our knowledgeable BJJ Instructors.  He began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2006 and earned his Brown Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2012.

Personal Accomplishments:
• B.A. Exercise and sports science
• Level 2 functional movement specialist
• Biosignature practitioner – One of 30 certified in Illinois

Vinny Levin 

Assistant Instructor – BJJ
Vinny, a brown belt since April of 2012, first started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in January 2006.  Vinny has been a fixture as an instructor for New Breed Training Center since 2009, imparting his knowledge to our members in our Fundamental Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes while keeping the classes easy-going but paced correctly.

Colin Lane 

Assistant Instructor – BJJ
Colin began his journey in Martial Arts training in Jeet Kune Do, while attending Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH. In  2002, he moved to Chicago and began training at the Carlson Gracie Academy.  Colin had the honor and privilege of training and traveling the world with him and became close friends with the great Carlson Gracie Sr.   Colin traveled to Manchester and London, England, Dublin, Ireland, Warsaw, Poland, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, assisting Carlson Gracie Sr. with seminars and private lessons.   Colin has also had the opportunity to train with UFC veterans, Stephan Bonnar and Miguel Torres as well as learning from BJJ greats Carlson Gracie Jr., Helio Soneca, and Fredson Paixao. After Carlson Gracie Sr.’s passing in February 2006, Colin began training with New Breed Training Center.  Since then, he has earned his Brown Belt and has become one of our resident instructors.  Colin focuses on teaching Fundamental Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Self Defense to our members.  He has also trained extensively in both Boxing and Muay Thai having earned the rank of an Assistant Instructor from Rick Sollo in 2009.

 

Rita “La Guera” Figueroa

Head Instructor – Boxing
Rita heads our growing Boxing program.  She has done a tremendous job and has grown our program into a sizable Boxing Team.  The most important thing to Rita with all of her experience is being able to use her experience to help others achieve their goals.  Her greatest reward for teaching is having a kid come in and say “Thank You” for keeping him in the gym and off the streets.  As Rita always says, Teamwork Makes The Dream Work.

• 4x Chicago Golden Glove Champion (2001-2004)

• Has trained or assisted in training over 30 Chicago Golden Glove Champions (Novice, Open, and Masters Divisions)
• Work alongside Sam Colonna in training some of Chicago’s top professional fighters.
